EHS Product Scams

Other pages on this site have explained the meaning of the term electrohypersensitivity or EHS and discussed the extensive scientific evidence showing that EMF does not cause EHS - even if the symptoms might be real. The major scientific weaknesses of a number of studies promoted by alarmists and the EHS lobby have been explained.

One should not be surprised that for a syndrome that is largely psychosomatic, hucksters will move in to try to profit from the weak and the gullible. On this page we will present a few of the more outrageous products in this category and their ridiculous claims.

xZubi Protector Scam
It seems that sometimes even medical doctors, who appear to have legitimate credentials, will promote scam products. Dr. Gifford-Jones who writes regular medical columns that are carried in news outlets across Canada, recently wrote a piece about "dirty electricity. In this column he shamelessly promotes a product called an xZubi Protector. The bi-line on the web site for this product makes the absurd claim that it "Neutralizes abnormal bio-electric patterns in the body caused by electronic devices". The web site includes fake graphs and "research" to support this nonsensical claim The bio on Dr. Gifford-Jones states that he is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. This goes to show that even impressive academic credentials offer no guarantee against the promotion of quackery.

BIOPRO Technology

BIOPRO Technology offers one of the most ridiculous products on the market for countering the alleged "harmful" effects of EHS. A product they call the "i-H2O Activator System" supposedly treats ordinary water in such a way that drinking it will protect the user against the "harmful" effects of EHS. They sell the system for the incredible price of $727.50!! They sell this and other dubious products of a similar nature through on line outlets in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. They are looking for more distributors.

How does this product work? We include some quotes taken from the product overview on their web site. The pseudo-scientific gibberish in this description has rarely been equaled!

"What powers BIOPRO products are innovative and scientifically substantiated technologies - BIOPRO's proprietary ERT™ (Energy Resonance Technology) and the patented, proprietary MRET® (Molecular Resonance Effect Technology).
Powered by a hi-tech polymer, the particles within the MRET® compound - once stimulated by EMF/EMR - oscillate, emitting a low frequency noise-field that superimposes itself over the harmful high-frequency microwave radiation. Studies have shown that this process creates an incoherent, bio-friendly wave; thereby dramatically reducing the otherwise inappropriately triggered protective responses by the body's key systems.
Research indicates that by wearing, (nutritionally) consuming and surrounding yourself with MRET®/ERT™ powered products, communication across your body's Biofield is greatly enhanced and strengthened, thereby improving the efficiency of all key processes. This effect is achieved through cutting-edge Molecular and Energetic Resonance between the MRET®/ERT™ charged product and your body's key energy systems

Head Nets

Here is a class of product that is truly as ridiculous as it looks. It supposedly protects the brain from the harmful effects of EMF, which according to the alarmists is "the most vulnerable part of the body". The head net is but one of a number of products being sold by the alarmist British Web site Powerwatch. The price is 26 British Pounds. This head net is handy for EHS individuals who are on the go. The following is a quote from the web site:

"You can wear the headnet in the garden, when travelling or when visiting places where microwave exposure is likely to be high e.g. shopping centres."

Power Line Filters

Power line filters such as those made by Graham-Stetzer and EarthCalm are a class of product that supposedly removes harmful "dirty electricity" from the electrical wiring in the home. The following "explanation" comes from dirtyelectricity.ca, one of the web sites selling this product:

"Dirty Electricity and other electrical pollution come from a number of sources. Clean electric power was originally intended to power our homes and buildings at a safe frequency of 60 Hertz (Hz). Today, for a number of reasons, it's becoming increasingly contaminated with invisible micro-surges of dangerous radio frequency radiation and other electromagnetic contaminates now referred to as "Dirty Electricity". It is produced by "modern energy-efficient lighting and electronic devices such as dimmer switches, computer and electronic entertainment centers….These electromagnetic contaminates ride along on a building's electrical system and can contaminate an entire building and even buildings and homes nearby…. more people are experiencing symptoms of electrosenitivities known as "Electrical Hypersensitivity" (EHS), as a result of their ongoing exposure to Dirty Electricity and increasing amounts of electromagnetic energy."

There is a grain of truth in the above claims. A low level of electrical noise is present in virtually all electrical wiring - but it is completely harmless.  In other pages of EMF & Health we have shown how EMF does not cause EHS. We have exposed major scientific flaws in "studies" (and another) on the effectiveness of Graham-Stetzer filters. But these products also make no sense based on straightforward physical principles.

For one thing, these power line filters might actually increase the level of EMF emanating from the electrical wiring, rather than decrease it! This is because, in reducing the voltage transients associated with "dirty electricity", they cause electrical current transients to flow through the house wiring to the filter. EMF is generated by a combination of voltage and current flow. In addition, the EMF emitted by actual devices in the home such as computers, electronics entertainments centers, not to mention ubiquitous radio and TV transmissions may be thousands of times higher than the minute amounts produced by the electrical wiring. In any case, there is no scientific evidence that any of these sources causes EHS.

This is born out in this Evaluation of Grahan Stetzer Filterst conducted by Health Canada. This study confirmed that power line filters such as those by Grahan Stetzer and Earth Calm actually increase the amount of "dirty electricity" current. But it also shows that, in any case, the level of the induced field in the body is tiny and certainly too small to cause any health effects.

In other words these expensive products are worthless!!

Pendants

Pendants are another class of scam products that claim to "reduce the negative effects of EMF". The explanation for how the Q-Link pendant works rivals the pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo for the BIOPRO water "treatment" device.

"The main component, the resonating cell, works as a crystalline oscillator to convert and conduct subtle energy into more coherent energy states, ones which are conducive to the healthy energy states of the person. The amplifying coil shapes and strengthens the size of the energy field that is conducted. It extends the power of the sympathetic resonance into a 3-dimensional field. This entire process strengthens the internal power and resilience of the wearer, allowing him or her to more effectively balance chaotic energies."

There is no scientific evidence that the $99.95 Q-Link pendant does anything at all, let alone reduces EMF!! Of course there is no scientific evidence that EMF causes any health symptoms.
